A good trailer can help you get the job done. Whether you are hauling a load of brush off to a landfill, or hauling your snowmobiles up to the top of the Rockies, a good trailer makes it all possible. A well built trailer can last for a very long time, and can take a lot of use over the years. However, a trailer, just like anything else needs to be well maintained or it can wear out much sooner than it should. Here are a few different ways that you can maintain whatever trailer that you are using:

Wash

Perhaps the most important way that you can maintain your trailer is to wash it once a week. One of the biggest problems that trailers run into is dust and other debris get into areas that it can cause damage. This is especially true if you are hauling objects that shed a lot of debris. If you are driving in the snow and the ice or have a boat trailer, it is likely that your trailer comes into contact with a lot of salt, and the salt can eat away the trailer. When you are washing your trailer be sure to give a little extra attention to the wheels, brakes, and suspension because the salt likes to collect in these areas. Simply giving your trailer a good wash once a week will keep it looking and functioning properly.

Lubrication

Any part of your trailer that has a moving part needs to be lubricated. Now that your trailer is washed, the dust and other debris are knocked off your trailer, but you need to ensure that the moving parts of your trailer are lubricated or the break down can be extremely quick. The winch, ball hitch, any swinging doors, and any other moving parts should be greased regularly. It is a good idea to check the lubrication of the moving parts of your trailer at least once a month, and before any long trips.

Safety

Driving is the most dangerous thing you will be doing each day, and it can be more dangerous if you are driving a trailer that is not properly maintained. Be sure that you are checking the safety features of the trailer each time that you hook the trailer on. The first thing that you want to check are the lights. Be sure that the brake lights and blinkers are working. You also want to check the brakes and the tires to ensure that you have a safe trip with your trailer.
